Hitting the New Year on a High Note
I am really looking forward to 2012. A lot has happened in 2011, and I feel like a ball is rolling at an ever more exciting pace with tons of new adventures! Remodeled has premiered; I am so excited about that, too!
As fun as this all is, I often find that exciting adventures have a way of distracting from the less-exciting stuff like... practice. With musical talent, it is important to keep up the chops even when other, more thrilling things start happening around you.
Singer-sensation Adele is a prime example of the importance of taking care of one’s voice. She had to cancel her US tour and undergo career-threatening surgery after damaging her vocal chords, a condition that is worsened by her love of smoking. What smoking alone didn’t harm... bad technique did. I find it devastating just thinking about Adele, at the height of her career, having to worry about whether her voice will return to its full glory!
Therefore, I decided to write down a list of basics that every singer should stick to... me included… so hitting those high notes will come easily when I need them to:
- Do vocal warm-ups, daily (Perhaps in the shower if there is no other time?!)
- Rehearse for a half-hour to an hour, daily
- Exercise for an hour or more daily (People don’t just hear us sing, they watch us perform, too!)
- Take a weekly or every other week singing lesson to improve voice (Even the late Luciano Pavarotti took lessons though he was considered the best tenor in the world – I recommend starting with online videos – look at YouTube; there are tons to get you started!)
- Take time to write new music at least 2-3 days a week. (Or more often, if possible. Very few people have the luxury of free time!)
Happy New Year everyone!
